Black History Month at Coquitlam College

Celebrating Black Excellence, Culture, and Contributions

Each February, Coquitlam College proudly joins communities across North America in celebrating Black History Month. This is a time to honour the significant contributions of Black communities throughout history and recognize their lasting impact on society. Officially recognized in Canada by the House of Commons in 1995 and by the Senate in March 2008, Black History Month serves as both a time for reflection and an opportunity to look ahead with optimism, celebrating Black culture, achievements, and excellence.

Our Commitment to Inclusivity

At Coquitlam College, we are committed to fostering diversity, inclusion, and mutual respect. Black History Month provides a special opportunity for everyone to engage in meaningful conversations, broaden their understanding of Black history, and celebrate the richness of Black culture. We encourage students, staff, and community members to actively participate in events, discussions, and activities that promote a deeper appreciation for Black heritage.

Events and Activities

Throughout February, Coquitlam College will host a variety of events to commemorate Black History Month. These include:

  • Name Wall of Inspiration: Students and staff will have the chance to write the names of Black individuals who inspire them—whether historical figures, celebrities, or personal heroes.
  • Traditional Dance Class (Rwandan Dance – Amaraba): Experience the cultural significance of Rwandan dance and its vibrant traditions.
  • African Snack Bar: Enjoy a selection of traditional African snacks and learn about their cultural importance.
  • Speak Easy Club: The club will feature discussions on Black History Month themes, offering a space for dialogue, reflection, and learning.
  • Celebrating Black History Through Film at Movie Club: Watch and discuss films that showcase pivotal moments in Black history and the stories of influential figures.
  • Library Display on Black Authors: The library will feature a special display highlighting works by Black authors, particularly those of African and African Canadian/American descent.
  • Colouring Lounge (Vancouver & Surrey Campuses): Unwind while engaging in creative activities that highlight themes of Black culture and history.
  • Book Club: Students and staff are invited to read and discuss The Sun Does Shine by Anthony Ray Hinton, a powerful memoir of his time on death row and his journey to freedom.

Looking Beyond February

While February offers a unique opportunity to reflect on Black history and achievements, Coquitlam College believes that the celebration of Black excellence should extend throughout the year. We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and supportive environment for all. We encourage students, faculty, and staff to continue learning and engaging with these vital topics year-round.
