Indigenous Initiatives

Land Acknowledgement

We respectfully acknowledge that Coquitlam College is situated on the traditional and ancestral territory of the Coast Salish peoples, who have cared for this land for countless generations. We honor the deep connection these Nations have with the lands and waters around us.

Note: Coquitlam (/koʊˈkwɪtləm/ koh-KWIT-ləm) derives from the Coast Salish term “kʷikʷəƛ̓əm,” meaning “red fish up the river.”

Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation

At Coquitlam College, we are dedicated to the ongoing process of truth and reconciliation, recognizing both the historical and current impacts of colonialism. By acknowledging and addressing injustices, we include ourselves in a future that respects and empowers Indigenous peoples and communities.

Support for Indigeneity

Our commitment to truth and reconciliation is reflected in our support for Indigenous perspectives, knowledge, and practices throughout our institution. This includes:

  • Curriculum Development: Incorporating Indigenous content, perspectives, and pedagogies into our courses and programs. We strive to ensure that all students gain a meaningful understanding of Indigenous histories, cultures, and contributions.
  • Policy and Practice: Implementing policies and administrative practices that focus on creating a welcoming environment for Indigenous students, faculty, and staff.
  • Community Engagement: Building strong, respectful relationships with local Indigenous communities, seeking their guidance, and actively collaborating in our initiatives.
  • Library Resources: Featuring books on Indigenous histories and cultures alongside displays of Indigenous artwork, celebrating and fostering appreciation for Indigenous perspectives.

Through these efforts, Coquitlam College is committed to creating an educational environment that not only acknowledges the past but also supports a more equitable and inclusive future. By honoring Indigenous knowledge and perspectives, we aim to support the success and empowerment of Indigenous peoples and communities.
