On-campus Sports and Activities Provide a Cultural Education
Coquitlam College offers students many opportunities every semester to participate in sports and other cultural activities, both on- and off-campus. The best part of participating in on-campus activities is that these activities are free to all students, and students can meet new friends while engaging in activities that they love. Students therefore do not only return home with transfer credit, certificates, diplomas and degrees, but also, and perhaps equally as important, they keep fit and have fun while completing their studies in Canada.
From Monday through Friday, at lunch time and after school, students can always find something interesting to do outside of class time. Sports they can join include Indoor Soccer, Badminton, Basketball and Hockey, and other activities include the Music Club, Puzzle Club, Meditation Club, Beading and Native Art Club, and Dance, among many other activities.
This semester we had an excellent group of students who loved to participate in many sports and activities offered. Thursday’s hockey evening stood out this semester in particular: Usually the hockey sessions consist of a games where a team of teachers plays against a team of students, or the teachers and students mix to form two teams, but last Thursday, the final day of the Spring semester, was especially cool because the large number of participants were able to play a game against each other without any teachers, which has never happened before in the history of Coquitlam College!
The students’ teams were formed of students from at least four different countries from around the globe, truly a multicultural Canadian experience, while also participating in a quintessential Canadian sport! We bet these students would never have guessed before coming to Canada that they would become so “Canadian” so quickly! Well done.
This is proof that students who participate in on-campus activities such as the drop-in hockey can return home with wonderful memories of their time spent at Coquitlam College, as well as a fantastic multicultural experience!
