Mercedes Eng: Inspirational Instructor of English
Mercedes Eng, instructor of English Composition and Poetry at Coquitlam College, has been awarded the prestigious Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize, a BC Book Prize awarded to authors of the best work of poetry in the BC and Yukon book community. Mercedes Eng’s second book, Prison Industrial Complex Explodes (published by Talonbooks) contains a long poem which combines government and corporate text with photographs and excerpts from personal letters, culminating in a lyrical examination of our current prison system and commentary on the treatment of Indigenous people, refugees and people of colour in Canada. https://bcbookprizes.ca/winners-finalists/2018-winners-finalists/#poetry
After 3 – 4 years spent writing this book, Mercedes is busy both inside and outside the classroom, with launches and readings of this book in Montreal and Kelowna this month, and in Toronto, Winnipeg and New York City next month. The book is being taught at institutions across North America.
